Travelling within the European Union (EU) can be an exciting adventure, but it's important to be prepared for unexpected situations, especially when it comes to medical care.
Some travellers rely on the Global Health Insurance Card (GHIC) for medical coverage while traveling in EU countries. However, relying solely on a GHIC without additional travel insurance can be risky.

Understanding the GHIC

The GHIC is a health insurance card that provides access to state-provided healthcare in EU countries. It is a post-Brexit replacement for the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) and is available to UK residents.

Despite being called the Global Health Insurance Card, it is currently only effective in Europe. The main difference between the two is that Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein and Switzerland which were covered under the EHIC are no longer covered by the GHIC.

Having an EHIC or GHIC card provides the holder to reduced-cost and sometimes free emergency treatment.

The GHIC is available for free, and you can apply for it through the official NHS website. It is important to note that the GHIC is not a substitute for travel insurance. In some cases, your travel insurer may require you to have one in place.

* Travel insurance companies provide different cover levels. Check your policy documents to see a list of the benefits provided by your own policy

** In the event of a medical emergency you must contact the emergency medical telephone number provided by your travel insurance provider so they can authorise any treatment and payment.

How do I get a GHIC Card?

Every member of the family needs their own card. If your child is under 16 years old you will need to apply on their behalf. You can also apply on behalf of your partner.

You can apply for a EHIC or GHIC for free via the NHS website. Allowing at least 4 weeks before you plan to travel in order to ensure it arrives in time for your trip.

It is advisable to have your card with you at all times, in case of an emergency.

However, if you find yourself without it in an emergency, you may be able to get a Provisional Replacement Certificate by calling the Overseas Healthcare Team on +44 191 218 1999 (Monday to Friday, 8am–5pm). It's a good idea to save this number in your phone.

The GHIC does not cover all medical expenses. For example, it does not cover private healthcare costs or medical repatriation to the UK. Additionally, it may not cover all costs associated with your treatment, and you may still have to pay for some services.

Limits

While the GHIC provides essential coverage, it has limitations:

For some countries you may be required to pay a patient contribution for your medical expenses upfront, which you may be able to claim back at a later date. Keep all receipts and documentation.
Repatriation costs - the GHIC does not cover the cost of returning to the UK if you fall ill or have an accident.
When travelling to foreign countries there may be limits to the type of doctors and hospitals in your region.
The GHIC does not cover private healthcare costs, which can be expensive.
The GHIC is for the European countries only.
Why You Still Need Travel Insurance.

The GHIC was introduced to provide access to state healthcare when you are travelling to the European Union. It provides the holder with reduced-cost and sometimes free emergency treatment, it is not a substitute for travel insurance.

Travel insurance can cover a wide range of issues, including:

Medical expenses - the GHIC does not provide cover, whereas, travel insurance can cover medical expenses that are not covered by the GHIC, such as private healthcare costs.
Trip cancellations - if you need to cancel your trip, travel insurance can cover the costs.
Lost or stolen belongings - travel insurance can cover the cost of replacing lost or stolen items.
