It’s not good news that people are looking to ‘opt out’ of their home contents policy. This highlights the extent of the current financial difficulties and while many people have cut-out luxury expenses, vital expenses are also being chopped.

If you have a mortgage there is a requirement to have buildings insurance. Whereas, contents insurance is optional. But insuring your possessions is generally a sensible idea, whether you're a tenant or the property owner.

Value for money

Whilst it’s not a legal requirement to have a contents policy in place, the value that it offers makes a sound financial investment, particularly in a cost-of-living crisis.

A home contents policy provides cover for possessions such as: furniture, electrical items, jewellery and clothes. These would be a huge cost if you had to replace them, and the concern is that many people could risk going without this cover to save money in the short-term.

If something should happen and you need to replace your contents, it would cost a lot more than the average price of a contents policy which could be as little as £1.50 a week
